OUR STORY

CURIOSITY

Abi-Saad Print & Design started with the curiosity of 20 year old Anthony Abi-Saad in 2017. Knowing absolutely nothing about apparel or printing, Anthony was intrigued when he saw a commercial for iron-on heat transfers. His friend recently started a brand, so he took it upon himself to buy transfer paper, print out their logo, and iron it on a t-shirt for him. It looked great, but the quality quickly degraded after wearing and washing it a few times. They didn’t want to call it quits, so they began doing some research on t-shirt printing and how to create a quality, long lasting print.

TRIAL AND ERROR

At the time, Anthony was studying graphic design at Bridgewater State University and had some money saved up from painting commissions for friends and family. He used those funds to buy a screen printing starter kit from Michael’s and a small press from eBay. Thus began the era of trial and error in the basement of the Abi-Saad household. He cleared out a small space in his parent’s basement and began setting up a small studio. From failing miserably while trying to coat screens and cure prints, to having to get transparency film printed at Staples and washing screens out in the kitchen sink, he was determined to figure out how to screen print. After a couple months of research and experimenting, he designed a simple logo while sitting in the back of an art history class and began printing it on t-shirts.

AMBITION

After creating a website and Instagram page, Anthony started to sell his own shirts to friends and family. From meeting people in parking lots, to selling shirts at the gas station where he worked at the time, he sold as many shirts as he could and reinvested every cent to buy more screens, ink, squeegees, shirts, and more. After months of printing his own shirts, people started to reach out for custom orders. While challenging, Anthony developed his skills enough to be able to print small orders for others. From printing shirts for friends’ brands, to designing logos for family members’ businesses, he started to fall in love with screen printing and design.

EXPERIENCE

Tired of working at a gas station, Anthony realized that he had enough experience to potentially get a job at a real screen printing shop. After calling a few local shops and striking out, there was a print shop in Plymouth, MA that called him back. A week later, he found himself sitting down for an interview and agreeing to a start date. He began working night shifts part-time and started soaking up everything about screen printing — everything from the fundamentals of screen printing and equipment, to how the business itself operated. After grinding more months working part-time, going to college, and working on his own apparel and artwork, it was time to take a leap of faith.
